Ink Jet Summer School 2008 Overview

Once again IMI Europe brings together four top courses for digital printing. Past Summer Schools have been a great success and this year we are again in London, making access from anywhere in Europe or for that matter, the world, very easy. We have chosen a quiet part of central London that has lots to offer within walking distance.

Conferences are a great way of staying up to date, but the IMI Europe Summer School is designed differently. Here, in a relaxed atmosphere, we offer courses to give you a deeper grounding in some of the key technologies for today’s ink jet printing industry.

The Ink Jet Academy - Theory of Ink Jet technology course has been running for over 8 years now, and over 1,900 have attended. Both technical and marketing staff will appreciate this broad introduction to ink jet printing, ink jet ink and systems technology.

Surface Tension, Wetting & Capillarity will appeal to those interested in the way that fluids form drops and how they wet surfaces. This is especially important for deposition applications of ink jet as well as for graphics printing. The course is led by Professor Avi Marmur of Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, one of the world’s experts in this field.

Ink Jet Ink Manufacturing explains what is involved in taking an ink jet ink from a basic formulation to a finished product. It will appeal not just to ink developers but also managers who want to understand the issues involved in in-house manufacturing of this lucrative consumable.

Piezo Printhead Technology will describe in detail piezo materials and their properties, how they are used to make drop on demand printheads, and how these heads operate from a theoretical point of view. Course leader Steve Temple was an inventor of the Xaar technology and until recently Technical Director.

Please remember that space for these courses is limited. Each year some of our courses sell out, so book early to avoid disappointment.

Imperial College London

Imperial College’s South Kensington Campus boasts one of London’s finest locations, adjacent to such landmarks as the Science, Natural History and Victoria & Albert Museumsand with Harrods in Knightsbridge and Hyde Park just a short walk away.

In 2007 Imperial College London celebrated the Centenary of its founding charter. Over the last 100 years the College has become one of the world’s leading science-based universities, responsible for discoveries including penicillin and holography, and innovations such as the maglev train and robotic surgery.
Accommodation
As London is not the cheapest place in the world to find a hotel room, we have reserved a number of college student rooms for our course delegates. These modern facilities would put some hotels to shame, and were only opened in October 2007. They have secured entry, 24 hour manned reception, en-suite facilities and broadband internet access for £70 per night including full breakfast. The rooms are only a 200m walk from the conference facilities. Rooms are available for the nights of Tuesday – Friday and are available on a first come – first served basis. Other nights and twin rooms may be available , please contact us with your requirements.

Alternately there are a wide range of hotels within walking distance to cater for all tastes – a full listing of these can be found at the bottom of this page.

Course programmes
Each course begins at 11 a.m. on the first day and finishes by 4 p.m. the second day, allowing most delegates to travel out and back with just one night’s stay. Of course you may want to stay longer as London has so much to offer!

Getting to Imperial College
Imperial College’s South Kensington Campus is easily reached by public transport to South Kensington Station on the London Underground, followed by a 5 minute walk – just follow the signs, and choose the underground walkway if its raining! To reach South Kensington:

By train: As well as fast trains within the UK, Eurostar run services to London St. Pancras from Brussels and Paris, with connections on to most Western European cities. From any London train terminus take the Circle Underground line directly to South Kensington.

By air: London Heathrow airport is connected by the Piccadilly line directly to South Kensington.

From London Gatwick airport take the Gatwick Express train to Victoria station, then the Circle Underground line to South Kensington.

From London Stansted airport take the Stansted Express train to Liverpool Street station, then the Circle line to South Kensington.

From London Luton airport take the shuttle bus to Luton Airport Parkway Rail Station, then the train to St. Pancras, then Underground to South Kensington.

By road: Although possible, London is not car-friendly. There is a congestion charge to reach Imperial College of £8 per day, and local car parking is around £20 per day.
